LAS VEGAS, Nevada-The Centenary women's tennis team opened Summit League play, falling to Western Illinois, 4-0 and Oral Roberts, 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at Bally's Resort in Las Vegas.
The Ladies dropped to 1-6 on the season with the two losses to begin league play. Against Western Illinois in singles action, #1 Isadora Bickham fell 6-1, 2-1 to the Leathernecks' Marcela Brandao.
Holden Penney was defeated by Stephanie Baumner, 6-0, 6-0, while Caitlin Orschel fell 6-0, 6-2 to Amy Unzicker. The Fighting Leathernecks picked up two default wins and swept the Ladies in doubles action as Bickham and Penney lost 8-1 and Polly Henderson and Orschel fell 8-0.
Facing Oral Roberts in singles, Centenary received its best competition from Bickham despite falling 3-2 to the Golden Eagles' #1 Lina Semenova. Penney (6-0, 6-0) was shutout by Kristen Gray, while teammate Orschel (6-0, 6-0) fell to Tayler Pippen. The Golden Eagles were also able to pick up two default wins.
In doubles play, Bickham and Penney were defeated 8-1, while Henderson and Orschel dropped their match 8-0.
Centenary will resume play on Friday with a match against South Dakota State, before facing UMKC and Southern Utah on Saturday.
