Beginning fall of 2012, Dr. Shelley Armstrong will enter her eighth year as head coach for both the men's and women's cross country teams. In January 2010, Armstrong was announced as Centenary's new Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for Centenary. She assists in providing a valuable perspective in the administrative decision making process.
Under her direction as a coach, Centenary has achieved a great deal of team success in the region. Individual accomplishments include first place meet finishes, four athletes being named Summit League Runners of the Week, as well as one male and one female runner receiving the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Freshman of the Year and first team all-LSWA awards.
Previously, Armstrong served as an assistant coach to the program for four seasons. She is a Centenary alum and was a member of the cross country team for four years and played softball for two years before graduating in 2000 with a BS in Health and Exercise Science. She finished her Masters Degree in May 2003 and received her Doctorate from Texas Woman's University in 2007. Her dissertation entitled, "Social connectedness, self-esteem, and depression symptomatology among collegiate athletes versus non-collegiate athletes ages 18 to 23: A comparative study" has been published in the Journal of American College Health.
Armstrong is currently an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Centenary Health and Exercise Science department. She has produced numerous publications in scholarly journals such as Gasrstroenterology Nursing and the LAHPERD Journal. Armstrong presents at local, state and national conventions and is a highly-requested speaker. Armstrong is the Race Director and originator of the annual Centenary College "Healthy Kids' Fun Run". Her service to the College and local community is outstanding. Armstrong was named as a 2008 40 Under 40 award honoree which recognizes "Northwest Louisiana's most successful young professionals for outstanding achievements and community involvement" by City Life Magazine and the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. She is an avid runner and a three-time Houston Marathon competitor, completing the 2004 race in the top 5 percent of all runners and the top 2 percent of all female runne. She also qualified for and competed in the Boston Marathon.
"To me, coaching is not a job, it's a lifestyle. It is doing something you love, helping to bring the best out of those involved, and supporting the entire athletic department and surrounding Centenary community," said Armstrong. "Running is all about overcoming adversity, growing, maturing, and being disciplined as individuals and working towards a common goal as a team. Besides respect and strong desire, this is what I hope to bring out of the program."
Armstrong is married to Brad Armstrong, a Commercial Real Estate Broker and native of Shreveport. Brad is a marathoner, Iron Man triathlete, and serves as a volunteer assistant coach to the teams.
