Rally falls short for Gents in season opener

MARSHALL, Texas – The Centenary baseball teams’ rally fell short as the Gents dropped a 10-8 decision at East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon. The two squads return to the diamond for a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch at Shehee Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
Christian Sebastien led the offensive charge for the Gents with three hits in the contest. Sebastien also tied for the team lead in RBI with two alongside Michael Schimpf. Taylor Reed and Chris Jones and Marc Martinez each collected multiple hits in the affair.
Taylor Henry took the loss on the mound for the Maroon and White. Henry tossed 3.1 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Holden Novak pitched the final 4.2 frames and allowed just two runs on four hits with a two walks and two strikeouts.
Centenary scored the first run of the affair as Martinez drove in Schmipf in the top of the third, but the Tigers answered totaling three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Blue and Gold extended its lead in the fourth as Phillip Windham posted a three-run homer to cap a five-run inning.
Schmipf added the Gents second run of the game with a solo dinger in the fifth as Jones collected a RBI-single in the sixth to nip the lead to 8-3. Back-to-back, bases load walks in the seventh pulled the Maroon and White to within three runs.
A Sebastien two-run homer in the eighth narrowed the lead to a run, but the Tigers wouldn’t be outdone in the opener tallying two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Centenary added a run in the ninth as Schmipf scored on a ETBU error, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Zack Tampke claimed the win on the hill for the Tigers with 6.1 innings pitched and five runs allowed in nine hits. Kirby Moore gathered his first save of the season tossing the finial frame of the contest and surrendering a run on two hits. Five total pitchers combined for the effort on the mound for ETBU.
