Diamond Gents Sweep Initial SCAC Baseball Awards
Monday, February 8, 2016

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Clean sweep on the weekend, might as well make it a sweep of the weekly baseball awards from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior Holden Novak and junior Scott Dwyer were named SCAC Pitcher and Player of the week, respectively, by the SCAC on Monday, February 8. The Gents swept in-state rival Louisiana College in a four-game set, beginning with a 5-1 and 6-1 doubleheader sweep in Shreveport Friday, February 5.

Centenary finished off the weekend with another doubleheader sweep, this time in Pineville, 13-2 and 7-3 Saturday, February 6.

Novak set the tone on the mound for the Maroon and White this weekend in the 2016 season opener. He struck out 10 in a complete game, seven-inning affair. He only allowed one walk and three hits, including taking a no-hitter into the fifth. He struck out a batter in 6-of-7 innings, including two in three frames.

Other than the unearned run in the top of the first, no Wildcat advanced pass second base against Novak.

Dwyer did not record a hit in his debut on the Diamond for the Gents, but he quickly made up for that with three multi-hit games to close out the weekend.  In game two Friday night, Dwyer doubled down the right field line in the sixth inning to drive in the first Centenary run of the game. A bunt single in the eighth loaded the bases as the Gents put up four insurance runs after the Wildcats cut the lead to 2-1 the previous half inning.

He added three hits and two runs scored in each of the games Saturday at Louisiana College. In game two, he tripled and later scored on a fielder’s choice in the third to help Centenary take a 4-0 lead. Dwyer later singled in a run and scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to help Centenary score two important insurance runs.

Centenary returns to the diamond Friday for the Clements Fluid Tournament. The Gents takes on UT Tyler at 6 p.m., in Tyler, Texas.
