Schimpf Named Academic All-American
Wednesday, June 1, 2016

SHREVEPORT, La. – Junior Shreveport-native Michael Schimpf had quite the year on and off the diamond for Centenary baseball. While he received numerous All-Conference and All-Region accolades for his play in 2016, he grabbed recognition for his academic achievements on Wednesday, June 1.

Schimpf received Second Team accolades on the 2016 Academic All-America® Division III Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It was the fourth time a Maroon and White athlete was recognized overall and the first time in five years.

“To be an Academic All-American is one of the highest honors a student-athlete can achieve,” said Head Coach Michael Diaz. “To be only the fourth Centenary athlete to be recognized for this award speaks volumes to what Mike accomplished this year. Mike truly defines what it means to be a student athlete and is the perfect ambassador for Centenary College and Centenary baseball.”

Schimpf holds a 3.92 GPA with a major in history and a minor in French. On the field, he made it a perfect 3-for-3 when Schimpf earned All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for the third-straight season. Schimpf led the SCAC this season with a .425 batting average – a mark that ranks 36th in the nation.  He finished ninth in the conference with 65 hits and third with 45 runs.

From February 14 through March 26, Schimpf tallied a 17-game hitting streak. The streak included eight straight games with at least a pair of base hits.

Schimpf also garnered SCAC All-Tournament honors, going 5-for-9 in two games with two runs scored, two RBI’s, and a home run.

“It speaks volumes that Michael was able to have a successful season in both the classroom and on the playing fields,” said Adam Walsh, the Centenary Co-interim Athletic Director. “Our whole coaching staff puts great emphasis on academic success with our athletes, as evidenced with our senior class graduating with the highest cumulative GPA since we became NCAA Division III. Michael is only the fourth honoree in Maroon and White history, but with the academic and athletic achievements of our student athletes, I fully expect to see that number increase in the next few years.”

Joining Schimpf on the Academic All-America teams from the SCAC was Will Cates of Southwestern.
