Schimpf Grabs First SCAC Baseball Offensive Player of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Senior Michael Schimpf turned in an impressive weekend to be named the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in baseball for 2017, released by the conference offices Monday, February 6.

After beginning the season 2-for-10 in the Gents 7-6 win at La Verne and 9-2 loss at Redlands, he exploded to hit for the cycle in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Redlands. He doubled in the fourth, but his three-run home run in the fifth capped a 6-run inning as Centenary took a 6-2 lead.

After Redland cut the lead to 6-4, Schimpf hit an RBI triple in the seventh inning. He achieved the cycle with a bunt single in the eighth. In the Centenary 9-2 win, he finished the game with four hits in five at-bats with four RBI’s and two runs scored.

Against #21 Occidental on Sunday, he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in a Gents 11-1 win.

Last year’s SCAC leader in batting average sits third after the first weekend with a .471 mark, leading the league in hits (eight), RBI’s (six), triples (one) and home runs (1).

Centenary returns to action Friday when it visits East Texas Baptist for a three-game series. First pitch Friday, February 10, is set for 7 p.m. in Marshall, Texas.
