NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Centenary gymnastics team started the 2017 season with a 186.3 at the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Classic in Nashville, Tennessee. The Ladies knocked off Wisconsin-Eau Claire (185.950), while Illinois State won the quad with a 192.550.

Temple finished runner-up with a 192.225 team score.

“We accomplished our goals, turning in one of the best season-opening team scores in my time at Centenary,” explained head coach Jackie Fain. “I am pretty happy with the results. Eight of our 24 routines were from freshman. I was great to see Olivia win on floor and Evelyn take fourth in the all-around and hit all her routines.

“Now we get back in the gym, clean up routines, and prepare for our home-opener in two weeks,” added Coach Fain.

Freshman Olivia Hirsch only competed on floor on the night, making her collegiate debut memorable by winning with a 9.750. She tied with Meredith LaRoche of Illinois State and Briana Odom and Sahara Gipson of Temple.

Freshman Evelyn Harris narrowly missed a 38 in the all-around in her first collegiate meet. She recorded a total of 37.975 to finish fourth. Her top scores include a 9.600 on both vault and on beam.

Junior Ashley White received her highest score of the competition on beam, receiving a judges’ average 9.675. Also only competing on floor in her only event of the night, sophomore Navia Jordan placed fourth with a 9.725. Senior Allison Scates, competing for the first time in two seasons, placed second on bars with a 9.625 - Just .050 off her career best.

Sophomore Tavia Smith recorded career bests on both vault (9.425) and beam (9.475).

The Ladies return to action in two weeks when they host Wisconsin-Oshkosh for their home opener on Friday, January 27. First rotation is scheduled for 6 p.m.
