Hello Centenary Gym fans!
This is sophomore Natalie Scates bringing you Gym Talk for this week. After getting home from Alaska on Monday night, your Ladies spent their next few days keeping up on school work and hitting the gym. We had a short week as Thursday morning came around and we were on our way to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where we would compete against the San Jose State University Spartans and the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. This high-energy competition took place on Friday, March 10, at 7 P.M., and was our last meet of the regular season!
After a “short” 6-hour bus trip up the road, we arrived in Fayetteville. We checked into the hotel and had little time to get settled before heading out for dinner. Coach Jackie had some special visitors, her son Aaron and his wife, along with her granddaughter, Tala. I know she was happy to see them and get to spend some time with Tala.
We had some changes to our itinerary during the trip, and as Coach always tells us, we had to be flexible and adapt, adjust and overcome! Our bus broke down and so Saturday we had to do some bus changing and re-arranging, but it all worked out great and we ended up with a bigger bus for the trip home – which meant more room for sleeping!
We went to the meet ready to compete in our third meet in eight days. We had a steady warm-up starting on beam and going Olympic order, finishing on bars. At this time of the year, after competing every weekend, warm-ups become just like another routine for each of us. The whole process takes the entire team, not just those in line-up. Everyone has a job to do, and it is important we all know what to do and when for things to go smoothly.
We had a pretty solid meet with some good performances. Vault had to compete with only five people due to an injury and some illness, but they seem to have settled in, and the line-up has been really consistent, as we went 5-for-5 with really good vaults. Senior Taylor Le Moal has been our starter on that event for the last three years and is always reliable to get it done. Beam was a little shaky, but Ashley White, Tavia Smith and Liz Sander all did amazing routines. Floor was a bit of a challenge for us here, but we had a few nice scores from Ashley and Cami Bea Austin. On bars Allison Scates, Evelyn Harris and Ashley all came away with good solid hit routines for the Ladies.
As you know, the Ladies are all about their academics coming first and working hard in the classroom to keep their GPA up. We had good news this week as Senior Taylor LeMoal announced she has been accepted into graduate programs at Duke, Baylor, and Virginia Tech. Congrats, Tay, we’re all so proud!
The Ladies rolled back into Shreveport early on Saturday morning and had the day to rest, recuperate, study, and enjoy a little time off before hitting the gym again on Sunday. This Thursday, we head off to Chicago, Illinois to compete at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships. This competition will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT, so wish your favorite Ladies luck!
