SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary men’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 season on Tuesday, Nov. 19 as the Gents host cross-town rival Louisiana State University-Shreveport. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.

In just the third meeting between the schools separated by five miles, the two squads have split the previous meetings. Centenary claimed the inaugural meeting in 1993, 75-60, in the Gold Dome. LSUS evened the series last season with a 92-71 decision in the first meeting on the LSUS campus.

Nine players from the 2012-13 season return for fourth-year head coach Adam Walsh, including Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Jonathan Blount. Blount and Jairus Browning stand as the lone, two seniors on the squad with four juniors and three sophomores from a season ago. Caden Cheramie returns for his second season with the squad after being named honorable mention on the all-conference team.

Blount led the conference in scoring last season with 21 points per game, the only player in the league to average 20-plus points for the season. Donovan Williams and Cheramie return as the leading rebounders for Walsh as they ranked 10th and 11th respectively in the SCAC on the glass.

Nine newcomers join the 2013-14 edition of the Gents, including seven freshmen.

Tuesday’s opener is the first of three contests for Centenary to open the season. The Maroon and White welcome East Texas Baptist on Nov. 21 and closes out the homestand on Nov. 23 against Louisiana College. The trio of outings is part of 12 contests inside the Gold Dome this season.
