Monday, April 24, 2017

BLANCO, Texas – Sophomore Jessica Varner overcame a 40 (+4) on the front nine to record a 35 (-1) on the back to lead the field by two strokes at +3 (75) after the first round of the Women’s Southern Collegiate Golf Championships at the 5,855-yard Par-72 Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas Monday, April 24.

The Ladies sit fourth of five teams after day one, carding a total of 351 (+63), 12 strokes ahead of Texas Lutheran.

24th-ranked Trinity leads the women’s championship with a +49 (337), two strokes ahead of 34th-ranked Schreiner and seven strokes ahead of 36th-ranked Southwestern. The Ladies trail the Pirates by just seven strokes.

“The Ladies are off to a solid start for the most part,” explained head coach Emlyn Aubrey. “If we can keep the top-3 going strong and get that good fourth counting score, we have a chance to move up tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, the Gents played a pair of rounds on Monday at the 6864-yard, par-72 Vaaler Creek Golf Club on the first day of the Men’s SCAC Championship, shooting a +118 (694).

28th-ranked Southwestern leads a close men’s championship with a total of +32 (608), just three strokes ahead of Texas Lutheran. 31st-ranked Schreiner sits in third, one stroke behind the Bulldogs. Trinity and Dallas are fourth and fifth, respectively.

“The Gents just continue to struggle mentally,” said Coach Aubrey. “There are a lot of good holes, but too many mental mistakes causing big scores are just too hard to recover from. We are just looking to improve each round, and we’ll have good vibes going into summer break.”

At four over at the turn, 52nd-ranked Varner carded a pair of birdies and just one bogey on the back nine to vault to the top spot, two strokes better than 50th-ranked Kaycee Bankert of Schreiner. Varner used a field-best 11 pars and a +2 score on par-4s (three strokes better than the next-highest scorer) to take the lead.

Meanwhile, sophomore Taylor Adair (+9, 81) sits tied for fourth, just six-strokes behind Varner. She is just one-of-11 golfers to record a birdie, and is the only other golfer other than her teammate to record double-digit pars (10) on the day.

Freshman Erin Rostro fired a 90 (+18) and is 16th. Senior Courtney Kale at 24th (105, +33) and junior Toni Collaro at 25th (117, +45) round out the Ladies competing.

For the Gents, freshman Brodey Warner improved five strokes in the second round and is 24th (170, +26). Classmate Reed Balcerowicz carded an 87 in both rounds and is 25th at +30 (174). Junior Graham Maxwell is 26th with a 175 (+31), while freshman Taylor Wells is tied for 27th with a two-round total of 176 (+32).

Sophomore Edvard Granrud is 29th with a 180 (+36) to round out the Gents field.
