SHERMAN, Texas – The Gents managed to overcome a goal scored against them with 18 seconds until halftime, but the ‘Roos managed another tally in the 82nd minute as Centenary (4-14, 2-11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Austin College (5-13-1, 3-10 SCAC) Thursday afternoon, October 29, in the penultimate game of the season in Sherman, Texas.

With the Maroon and White down a goal, freshman Nick Hammond knotted the contest with header off a cross from classmate Braylen Hollins. Hollins crossed the ball in front of the goal and found Hammond, who flicked the ball off his head into the net for his third goal of the season.

The assist was Hollins second in as many matches.

Both teams had a handful of shots off target early in the game, but both teams only managed one shot on goal in the first 40 minutes. After Austin College’s Levin Dyson had his shot saved by junior Rylan Whan in the 41st minute, the ‘Roos Gideon Ibemere scored just 18 ticks before half. Ibmere scored his first goal of the season on a long cross to the right post by Josh Jones.

Almost two minutes after the equalizer by the Maroon and White, Austin College scored the game winner when Thomas Quick’s shot deflected off of junior goalie Rylan Whan’s hands for his sixth goal of the season.

The Gents kept the pressure on the ‘Roos with a pair of shots and a corner in the final eight minutes, but junior Jeremy Klespis’ attempt went wide right, and senior Michael Pullano’s shot was blocked.

Whan (3-12) grabbed six saves for Centenary. He is just four stops away from tying the single season record for Centenary. Austin College split goalies, with Michael Moran grabbing a save on the only shot he faced in the first half. Joseph Khalaf (4-7-1) snatched a pair of saves in three shots faced in the second stanza.

The Gents return to action for their season finale on Halloween Saturday against nationally ranked Colorado College. Kickoff in Irving, Texas, is set for 10:30 a.m.
