JACKSON, Miss. – On a hot and humid afternoon in Mississippi, the Gents used an early score and broke the tie right before half as Centenary (1-0) held off Belhaven (1-0) in the season opener for both teams Thursday, Sept. 1.

It took less than three minutes for the Maroon and White to open the scoring on the season. Sophomore Andre Anasi served a long ball to freshman Scott Halper. Halper crossed the ball in to the six-yard box to sophomore Nick Hammond, who tapped the ball in to the goal. Centenary led 1-0.

Belhaven found the back of the goal on a fortuitous ricochet in the 30th minute, but the Gents tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal less than eight minutes later. Freshman Seth Fountain served a ball from near midfield in to classmate Bailey DeRoussel at the top of the box. DeRoussel beat the defender to the ball and placed the ball on goal for his first collegiate score.

Centenary managed a trio of shots in each half, putting four on goal. Belhaven managed 11 shots and five on goal, but senior goalie Rylan Whan grabbed four saves in the final 46:15 of the game for the win in goal.

Josh Gates faced three shots and allowed a pair of goals to take the loss for the Blazers.

Belhaven used a lucky bounce in the 30th minute to briefly level the score. Jonathon Goliday found Nicolas Cornejo right post. Cornejo’s shot hit the post, but the ball took a diagonal path to the left side in the goal to knot the contest.

Centenary men’s soccer returns to action Saturday, Sept. 3, in the 2016 home opener. The Gents play Howard Payne at 6 p.m.
