Wednesday, September 7, 2016

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – It was quite the start on 2016 for Centenary soccer when the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference handed out its initial 2016-17 Soccer Player of the Week honors.

Shreveport’s own sophomore Nick Hammond and classmate Kati-Jayde Cunningham captured the men’s and women’s SCAC Offensive Player of the Week awards. Senior goalie Erica Coker also won her fourth career Defensive Player of the Week award.

The initial SCAC awards were for games played Sept. 1-4. The Gents and Ladies both began the season with a pair of wins against Belhaven on Sept. 1. The men beat Howard Payne 2-0 and the women knocked off Louisiana College 5-0 in the home opener for both squads Sept. 3.

In goal for the Ladies, Coker pitched a pair of shutouts and grabbed eight saves. She now sits third in saves and seventh in shutouts in the career annals for Centenary Ladies soccer.

Also for the Ladies, Cunningham made quite the impression in her first two games in a Ladies uniform. She scored the first goal of the season against Belhaven, and recorded the first two scores against Louisiana College. She also added an assist on the fifth goal of the game. Cunningham leads the SCAC in points (seven), goals (three) and game-winning goals (two).

Finally, Hammond also scored the first goal of the season for the Gents against Belhaven. He found the back of the net on both goals against Howard Payne. He leads the SCAC in points (six) and goals scored (three).

The Gents and Ladies return to action Friday, Sept. 9, to open up SCAC play at Austin College. The men are 3-0 and off to their best start since 1987 while the women are 2-1.
