Near Sweep of Relays, Three Individual Titles Leads to Hendrix Invite Wins
HENDRIX, Ark. – Behind a successful weekend (November 18-19) in relays, two individual event wins, and two top-10 times in Ladies and Gents history, both Centenary swimming teams bested the seven-team field at the 2016 Hendrix Invite.
The Gents blew the field away with 697 points, more than 200 better than host Hendrix. The Ladies won a nail-biter with the hosts, 579-558.
“Saturday was the best day of swimming that we’ve had this year,” explained assistant coach Kyle Joplin. “Team captains Juan Tapia, Cameron Barney, and Caitlyn Faulhaber all had liftime best in-season swims. Our women also won 3-of-4 relays.”
In individual events, freshman Jessi Jordan bettered her 200 breaststroke by more than a second, touching the wall in 2:37.29. The time is the ninth best in Ladies history.
Freshman Jordan St. Pierre spearheaded a successful 1650 freestyle for the Gents, where five of the top-6 spots in the event were claimed by Centenary swimmers. St. Pierre finished in 17:00.07, the eighth fastest mark in school history and the 35th-best time in the nation this season.
After John McCulluogh of Tabor College finished runner-up to St. Pierre, the Gents claimed spots through the sixth. Freshman Michael Smith touched the wall third (18:14.51), junior Zack Harrison fourth (18:33.97), sophomore Zachary Norton fifth (19:01.66), and sophomore Wesley Black sixth (19:21.74).
The relays also proved successful for Centenary, as the Ladies won the 200-yard free, 400-yard medley, 200-yard medley, and took second in the 400-yard freestyle relays. The team of junior Caitlyn Faulhaber, freshman Liz Ryan, senior Jane Barney, and sophomore Elena Ring won the 200 free by more than three seconds with a time of 1:44.09. Ring, Jordan, Barney, and Ryan captured the 400 medley by more than four seconds with a time of 4:18.13. Freshman Ellen Atkinson, Jordan, Ring, and Ryan took the 200 medley by nearly two seconds, touching the wall in 1:57.81.
The Ladies quartet of Faulhaber, Barney, freshman Tori Boyle, and Jordan claimed runner-up honors in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:53.49.
For the Gents, the 200 free and 200-medley relay teams took top honors. The 400 medley took second, while the 400-free relay team finished fourth. The team of juniors Anthony McDonald, Mason Kay, and Roberto Roig-Perez, with Harrison as anchor, rallied from a deficit after the first leg for a nearly a 0.5-second win against Austin College. Centenary finished in 1:30.55. The 200 medley team of senior Juan Tapia, McDonald, sophomore Paul Ahluwalia and Harrison won by a second with a time of 1:40.70.
The 400-medley relay team cut a three-second deficit to less than one, but could not complete the comeback, as the quartet of Tapia, McDonald, Ahluwalia, and Harrison took second with a time of 3:42.92. The 400-relay team of Kay, Ahluwalia, Tapia, and Roig-Perez finished fourth in 3:25.32.

Barney took second (20:07.16), sophomore Rebecca Dunn third (20:21.81), and Boyle fourth (20:52.67). In the 500 free for the Gents, St. Pierre placed second (4:57.27), Harrison third (5:03.22), and freshman Eddie Dyess fifth (5:11.34).
Jordan for the Ladies and Harrison for the Gents both claimed a pair of individual runner-up honors. Jordan finished second in the 400 IM (5:04.59) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.37). Harrison touched the wall second in the 100 (48.80) and 200 freestyles (1:47.10).
