Centenary joins SCAC as sixth member
SHREVEPORT – Change is surrounding Centenary Athletics with the launch of its new website and the hire of new Director of Athletics and Wellness Ronda Seagraves, but it doesn’t stop there.
The Ladies and Gents officially make the move into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) July 1, ending its one-year stint in the American Southwest Conference (ASC).
“After an excitement-filled year to Division III competition, this move signifies an alliance with a much more academically like-minded group of institutions,” said Adam Walsh, assistant athletic director and head men’s basketball coach.
Centenary is still in the transitioning process from Division I to Division III, and was recommended for Year 3 Provisional Status at the NCAA Division III Membership Committee less than two weeks ago. According to a release on the SCAC’s website, the NCAA Division III Management Council will meet in July to approve all provisional/reclassifying membership recommendations made by the Membership Committee.
“This is a big step for us,” said Jon Stenman, who filled in as Interim Athletics Administrator in the absence of a full-time Director. “We are very pleased they would recommend us for this and I believe it’s a testament to the hard work, dedication and perseverance to everyone involved in Centenary athletics.”
Centenary is officially the sixth member of the SCAC and is on pace to receive Division III membership in 2014-15. The Ladies and Gents will be eligible for conference postseason play and conference awards for student-athletes and coaches immediately in the upcoming school year. This comes as a welcome change for all as this was not a benefit the department had in the American Southwest Conference.”
“We are very excited to be competing for conference championships immediately in the SCAC,” Walsh said. “Not being eligible for national postseason play until we earn active member status in 2014-15 is tough enough on our kids, but now we can balance that and have opportunity to start out Division III winning traditions by hanging SCAC Championship banners.”
Centenary joins Austin College, Colorado College, Southwestern University, Trinity University and the University of Dallas in the six-team conference. The conference will add current ASC members Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University in 2013-14. For more information about the SCAC, visit www.scacsports.com.
