SHREVEPORT, La. The Centenary men’s tennis team (1-11) took home its first victory of the year by taking down in-state rival Louisiana College Monday night, April 4, at the Centenary tennis courts. The Ladies tennis team (0-12) lost a heartbreaker to the Wildcats, 5-4.

“The players finally played within themselves and just played solid tennis,” said Centenary head coach Jeffery Herr. “I told them they did not have to play fantastic to win, and that is where they played better, played sharp, and got the win. They were not playing to hard or making extra shots, they were playing within themselves. That produces winning tennis.”

Stafford Lyons and Matthew Ferrell teamed up at first doubles for the 8-0 shutout. Scott Nguyen and Jonathan Harrel captured the win at second doubles, 8-2. Erick Norem and Kane Kershaw fell at third doubles, 8-3.

Taking a 2-1 lead into singles action, the Gents took 5-of-6 matches for the 7-2 win. Lyons easily dispatched Andrew Sylvester 6-0 in both sets. Harrel completed the perfect day with his own pair of set wins, 6-0, against Josh Pickett of Louisiana. Chris Matthews won 6-1, 6-2 against Matt Standiford at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Norem won a thriller against Charles Firmin 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Ferrell lost a pair of 6-2 sets to Drake Battaglia of Louisiana College at second singles.

For the Ladies, both teams split singles matches, but a 2-1 advantage in doubles action gave the Wildcats the win. Becca Missy and Tierra Range teamed up for the 8-3 win at third doubles, but Halen Sumner and Laura Perilloux fell 8-2 at first doubles. Clemence DeKermabon and Katherine Lind fell at second doubles by an identical score.

“The Ladies showed some pretty good discipline with their execution, and I was happy for them,” said Herr. “We won four matches against Louisiana College, so I feel that was pretty big step for the Ladies. We will take this going forward and see how it goes.”

Sumner won both sets at third singles 6-0 for the Ladies. Perilloux took second singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Range won at sixth singles 6-4, 6-2. Clemence DeKermabon lost both sets 6-3 at first singles. Taylor Payne best Missy, 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles while Isabella Santa Maria clinched the match for the Wildcats when she beat Lind 6-2 in both sets.

Centenary returns to action next Tuesday, April 12, when it returns the trip to Pineville, Louisiana.

Added Herr, “We will face tougher competition, but we go back to face Louisiana College so we will see how we fare down there. I suspect we will be ok if we play good ball.”
