Nicholls State vs Centenary Box Score

RUSTON – The Centenary women’s soccer team continued their winning ways, defeating Nicholls State 3-2 in overtime, sweeping their competition in the Grambling Tournament.

The match was filled with back-and-forth action, with both squads having several scoring opportunities. Nicholls State (0-4-0) struck first, scoring in the 25th minute. The Lady Colonel’s Lynn Simmons collected a misplayed ball by Centenary’s defense and tapped the ball past keeper Lindsey Stafford. The goal was the first allowed by Stafford this season.

The Ladies responded aggressively, attacking Nicholls State’s defense and scoring in the 38th minute on a Mindi Levinski penalty kick. Levinski started the play as she fed a streaking Rebecca Swilley deep towards the goal. Swilley drew the penalty in the far right side of the box and Levinski pushed the ball into the same corner past the diving Nicholls State keeper.

Both teams continued to play evenly through the majority of the second half, with Nicholls State finally taking advantage with a penalty kick goal of their own in the 77th minute. Centenary was whistled for a foul at the top of their box and Tori Priddy took advantage by lofting her shot over Stafford on the ensuing kick.

Centenary (3-0-0) didn’t give up though, and answered with a goal less than a minute later. Samantha Savage scored her first goal of the year, collecting a pass from Rita Coolidge in front of the net, and blasting the ball through the frame.

Overtime ended almost as quickly as it began, as Swilley refused to go home empty handed. She collected a long pass from Tara Sageser, eluded both a Lady Colonel defender and keeper, and put the ball away for her second consecutive game-winning goal. Sageser’s assist ensured that the freshman had scored in all three of her collegiate appearances.

The Ladies travel to Northwestern State on Friday and to Stephen F. Austin next Sunday.
