Friday, August 24, 2007

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Centenary volleyball team opened its 2007 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Prairie View A&M at the Texas A&M Invitational on Friday. The Ladies fell by the scores of 30-17, 30-24, and 30-25, but things weren’t all that bad for the young team.

Centenary (0-1) committed 17 service errors in the three-game match, helping Prairie View keep the momentum throughout. However, many individuals were playing their first collegiate match for the Ladies and showed signs of their potential.

“For an all new system, with almost half the team being new as well, there were a lot of good moments. But then we would revert to old bad habits,” said first-year Centenary coach Patrick Maiden on the Ladies play Friday. “Overall, there were plenty of positives, but also plenty of things we need to fix.”

Centenary hit only .056 percent for the match with their best team effort coming in the first game. Junior Ashlee Freeman led the offensive attack with 11 kills on 34 attempts. Senior setter Lindsay Bekelja finished with 25 assists in the loss.

The freshman tandem of Stephanie Hobaugh and Yvonne Ramirez combined for 29 digs on the defensive side of the net. Hobaugh led the way with 16 digs in her Centenary debut.

Prairie View A&M (1-0) received double digit kills from Ashley Campbell (14) and Tamika Newman (13). Laura De La Fuente dished out 30 assists for the Panthers while Campbell added four service aces.

The Ladies will take to the court again at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday when they battle the host Aggies at 12:30 p.m. before wrapping up play against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi A&M at 4 p.m. Links to the live stats and live video provided by Texas A&M can be found on the Centenary Volleyball schedule page at www.GoCentenary.com.
