Gents Open 2007 Season at Central Arkansas and Missouri State
Thursday, August 30, 2007

SHREVEPORT – After missing the conference tournament by just one game, and losing three student-athletes from last seasons roster, the Centenary men’s soccer team looks to be a tough competitor in the Summit League during the 2007 campaign. The Gents return three all-conference honorees from last season, junior forward Aaron Volanski (Magnolia, Texas), sophomore forward Sam Robinson (Houston, Texas) and fellow classmate, midfielder Todd Faulkinberry (Bossier City, La).

This season Centenary will feature 13 freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and four seniors. Leading the offensive charge will be Volanski, who scored seven goals last season, along with Robinson, who found pay dirt three times. Anchoring the defense for the Gents is senior James Speed (Corpus Christi, Texas), who will be between the posts, while fellow seniors John Marquart (Huntsville, Texas) and Aron Taylor (Calgary, Alberta), will head up the back three. Also playing in his final season at Centenary will be midfielder Osama Buazza (Houston, Texas), who has scored three career goals, which includes two scores as a freshman.

Central Arkansas will be the Gents first opponent this season on Friday, with the match starting at 4 p.m. This will be the second time these two teams have met, as the Bears and Gents met in Shreveport last season, with UCA taking the match 2-1. This season Central Arkansas will be without its leading goal scorer from a season ago, Nick Hankins, who hit the back of the net five times and helped lead the team to a 6-8-2 mark.

Missouri State will host Centenary on Saturday evening, which will be the Bears first match of the regular season. Missouri State lost its only exhibition match, falling to Rockhurst (Mo.) 3-0 in Springfield. MSU also loses its leading scorer from the 2006 season, Ryan Anderson, who hit four goals and helped push the Bears into the Missouri Valley Tournament with an 8-8-3 record.

After the trip to Arkansas and Missouri, Centenary’s next action will be Sept. 9 at Alabama-Birmingham. The first home action for the Gents is Wednesday, Sept. 12 against Bellhaven at 6 p.m.
