Centenary Volleyball Earns First Win of Season

CONWAY, Ark.—The Centenary volleyball team grabbed its first win of the 2007 season by defeating Mississippi Valley State 3-2 in a lengthy five-game match. The victory came in the opening contest for the Ladies in the Central Arkansas Tournament by the scores of 25-30, 30-19, 30-28, 26-30, 15-12.


Centenary (1-7) enjoyed fine performances on several fronts from multiple players. Three Ladies accounted for double digit kills led by junior Ashlee Freeman’s career-high 20 kills. Freshman Stephanie Hobaugh also recorded a career-high 16 kills playing in just her eighth career match, while junior Danielle Bochat added 14 kills in the victory.


Bochat was also one of five Centenary players to reach double digit digs with 11. Freshman Yvonne Ramirez totaled 21 digs while senior Lindsay Bekelja notched a double double with 51 assists and 20 digs. Bochat included, three Ladies tallied double doubles with Freeman chipping in 19 digs.


The impressive numbers did not stop there as the win proved to be a total team effort. Sophomore Christina Nichols finished with a match-high seven block assists and freshman Elise Sisson served up an outstanding seven aces.


Overall, Centenary hit .157 for the match with 64 kills and only 32 errors. Sisson was particularly lethal when swinging as she pounded down eight kills in 22 attempts without a single error. The Ladies also out-blocked MVSU 11-10. The one low spot for the Maroon and White in the match was still the high number of service errors at 17.


Mississippi Valley State (4-5) received a tremendous offensive effort from Maura Moed, who finished with 21 kills. Alyssa Knaus also recorded a match-high 29 digs in the loss.


Centenary will play its second match of the day when it takes on host Central Arkansas at 6:30 p.m.
