Ladies Softball Releases 2008 Schedule
Tuesday, September 18, 2007

SHREVEPORT—Centenary head softball coach Mark Montgomery has released the Ladies 2008 schedule. The slate features over 15 contests against major conference schools from the Big 12, SEC, Big 10, Big East, WAC, and Conference USA as well as a mix of contests against regional opponents.

Centenary begins the 2008 season with a top-notch schedule that would intimidate a lot of teams, but Montgomery does not see it that way. “Starting the season with a run of games against the caliber of opponents we will face will not only prepare us for the level of play we expect to be at, but it will also familiarize the players with the type of teams that we could meet if we make the NCAA Tournament,” said Montgomery.

The series of games against top opponents that Montgomery is referring to comes straight out of the gate for the Ladies. Centenary will play 14 of its first 15 games against teams from major conferences, with 11 of those games being against BCS (Bowl Championship Series) schools.

The Ladies play two games each against Oklahoma State (Big 12), Alabama-Birmingham (C-USA), and Arkansas (SEC) in the season-opening Texarkana Tournament Feb. 8th through the 10th. The following weekend, Centenary will square off against Purdue (Big 10), Syracuse (Big East), and Baylor (Big 12) for two games each at the Baylor Tournament.

After a midweek trip to face Louisiana Tech (WAC) on Feb. 20th, the Ladies head south for the University of Houston Tournament where they will lock up with Texas State and Kansas (Big 12) on the opening day of the event. They round out the tournament with a tough Cal State-Northridge team, Houston (C-USA), and Boston University.

Centenary next plays a home and home series with Grambling State within a week’s span and Louisiana Tech repays the Ladies with a trip to Shreveport for Centenary’s home-opener on Feb. 28th.

March brings the Ladies its last pre-conference tournament appearance in a trip to the Oklahoma State Tournament. At that event, the Ladies will tangle again with OSU as well as face Stephen F. Austin among others.

On March 12, Centenary hosts South Alabama (C-USA) before opening Summit League play on March 14th and 15th against IUPUI in Shreveport. The Ladies will also face UMKC, Oakland, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, and IPFW in conference action throughout March, April, and the beginning of May. The Summit League Tournament is slated for May 9th through the 11th on the campus of Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah.

Non-conference tilts are also scattered throughout the last three months of the season. Home games include Southeastern Louisiana (March 26), Stephen F. Austin (April 2), North Texas (April 9), and Northwestern State (April 29). Road games are at Lousiana-Monroe (March 27), Alcorn State (April 16), and Northwestern State (April 23).

“With this schedule, we will have to be ready to play and be at the top of our game for every contest in order to win,” said Montgomery. “This is a challenging schedule, but one that could earn us a lot of respect if we take care of business on our end.”

Centenary will have an experienced team heading into Montgomery’s sixth year as head coach. The Ladies lost only two seniors from last year’s squad and have only two freshmen on the team this season.
