Friday, September 21, 2007

SHREVEPORT – After traveling to the Bluegrass and Lone Star States in the last week, the Centenary men’s soccer team will be back at home on Sunday to welcome IUPUI to open the Summit League schedule at 1 p.m. The Gents are looking to stay unbeaten at home after they defeated Belhaven 2-0 on Sept. 12.

On Thursday, Centenary created opportunities to beat SMU after scoring the first goal of the match in the third minute of action, when sophomore Todd Faulkinberry received a pass from senior James Speed. However, during the next trip down the field the Mustangs evened things at one.

The Gents had another shot to take the lead, but freshman Josh Gomillion’s shot went wide. Shortly after Centenary had the opportunity lead the match, junior Aron Taylor was given a red card, and the Gents had to play a man down for 75 minutes.

Sunday’s opponent IUPUI is 1-5-1 with its lone win coming against Western Michigan on Sept. 14. Jaguars are led offensively by Vangel Nacovski, who has two goals and assist. In goal IUPUI has played four different goalkeepers, with Peter Brasovan, who leads with 17 saves and one shutout.

Centenary is led by this week’s conference Player of the Week Aaron Volanski, who has scored five goals, while he’s followed up by Gomillion and Faulkinberry, who scored his first collegiate goal on Thursday.

Overall for the Jags, they have scored .97 goals a game, while they have given up almost two and half goals a contest. The Gents have averaged one goal a match, while they give up just over three.

After the conference match on Sunday, Centenary will play at Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Gents will be back on the road on Oct. 5, at IPFW, which is one of the newest members of the Summit League.
