Saturday, September 29, 2007

SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-18, 30-15, 30-24) to Summit League newcomer IPFW Saturday night in the Gold Dome. The Mastodons kept the Ladies from getting on track offensively by posting 10 blocks in the victory.

Centenary (1-15, 0-4 Summit) allowed IPFW (9-7, 3-3 Summit) to hit at a .343 clip in both of the first two games. Jessica Miller and Mayara Schlindwein pounded down nine kills for the Mastodons through those games as IPFW sailed to a 2-0 advantage in the contest.

Game three would be more exciting for the Centenary faithful as the Ladies put up a successful blocking effort of their own. Four and a half of Centenary’s five and a half blocks would come in the final game.

Trailing 12-4 after three service aces from IPFW’s Jessica Dominiak, the Ladies scored four of the next five points to inch closer. Minutes later, the Maroon and White put together a thrilling 7-0 run backed by a Danielle Bochat ace and a Rebekah Hill kill to take the lead at 16-15. The game then see-sawed back and forth until another Miller kill gave IPFW a two-point lead at 24-22. The Mastodons then pulled away to win 30-24.

Miller and Schlindwein finished with 12 kills apiece for IPFW while Rebekah Roehm and Cynara Martins each contributed eight kills in the win. Dominiak passed out 36 assists and dug a match-high 15 balls in addition to collecting six aces.

Centenary was led by Stephanie Hobaugh’s seven kills. Hill, Bochat, and Freeman tallied six kills for the Ladies. Lindsay Bekelja dished out 24 assists in the loss.

Centenary will travel for three matches next week, beginning with a trip to face Grambling State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Ladies will then take a Summit League swing to UMKC on Friday and Western Illinois on Saturday.
