First Half Goal Gives Gents Win
Friday, October 19, 2007

SHREVEPORT – 12 seconds before the first period ended, redshirt freshman Mo Assi scored his first career goal to give the Centenary (3-9-0, 2-2-0) men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Oral Roberts (4-8-0, 1-2-0) on Friday night in Summit League play.

Offensively ORU out shot the Gents 17-9 and on one of its opportunities the Golden Eagles nearly tied the match midway through the second half. However, on his ‘Senior Day’ goalkeeper James Speed dove off to his right to make an outstanding save to help preserve his fourth career shutout, and third of the season.

Speed made two saves tonight and the defense helped him out with another, while ORU’s goalkeeper Andrew Techanchuk made one stop in two chances. Junior Gabriel Silvas and Assi led the Gents with a shot on goal each.

The victory for Centenary was an important one, as it is now in control of its own destiny to make the conference tournament next month. The Gents are now a half game up on ORU for the final spot in the tournament with two matches to play.

Centenary’s next action will be a nonconference match at Tulsa on Thursday, and then will play conference foe Western Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 27.
