ORU Sinks Volleyball Ladies 3-0

SHREVEPORT—The Oral Roberts volleyball team regained a share of the Summit League lead with a 3-0 victory over Centenary on Sunday in the Gold Dome. The Golden Eagles dismissed the Ladies 30-19, 30-17, and 30-22 behind 17 kills from Janete Ferreira.


Centenary (1-23, 0-10 Summit) trailed 5-3 in the early going of game one before ORU grabbed seven of the next eight points to move comfortably on top at 12-4. The run was sustained on kills from Jackie Oliveira and Danijela Novakovic along with three service aces, one by Oliveira and two from Nicole Weis. The Ladies would never get closer than five points in the game, losing 30-19.


Oral Roberts (13-10, 8-2 Summit) took control of game two out of the gate on three Centenary errors. Trailing 4-0, the Ladies finally got on the board with a Danielle Bochat kill. The Maroon and White cut the deficit to one point at 7-6, but minutes later the Golden Eagles surged out to a 13-6 advantage on four more errors by the Ladies. ORU cruised from that point to the 30-17 win.


Centenary came alive in game three as its offense began to find a rhythm. Held to just nine kills in each of the first two games, the Ladies exploded for 17 kills in the final contest. Several long rallies were played and Centenary inched its way to a one-point deficit at 20-19 after falling behind by six points at 17-11. Stephanie Hobaugh, Ashlee Freeman, Rebekah Hill, and Bochat all contributed kills in the run for the Ladies.


Down 24-22, Centenary ran out of gas and Oral Roberts pushed for the final six points of the match behind five kills, two from Ferreira.


Ferreira’s 17 kills were a match-high and JoJo Souza and Oliveira each added 10 kills for Oral Roberts. Thais Parada added 37 assists in the win for the Golden Eagles.


Freeman recorded a team-best nine kills for Centenary and Christina Nichols hit .400 on the game with six kills on 15 attempts without committing an error. Lindsay Bekelja dished out 30 assists to go with 10 digs and Yvonne Ramirez tallied 17 digs for the Ladies.


Centenary returns to action on Friday when it hosts Western Illinois at 7 p.m. The Ladies welcome UMKC to the Gold Dome on Saturday at 5 p.m. for the final home match of the season.
