Thursday, October 25, 2007

SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team will host Western Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. and UMKC on Saturday at 5 p.m. for its final home matches of the 2007 season. Saturday’s pre-match events will feature a special presentation for senior Lindsay Bekelja.

Although Centenary has six matches left in the season, the final four will be played on the road against IPFW, IUPUI, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State. The Ladies played only 10 matches at home in the Gold Dome this season and only one non-conference tilt.

Centenary (1-23, 0-10 Summit) will look to wrap up Bekelja’s sparkling career as the Ladies most productive setter in program history with a pair of wins. The senior owns Centenary records for most assists in a career (4,251), in a season (1,268), and in a single match (67). She also ranks in the top 10 in block assists, digs, and service aces.

Western Illinois (10-12, 7-3 Summit) has won five of its last seven matches with losses to Northern Iowa and IPFW mixed in between. The Westerwinds defeated the Ladies 3-0 in Macomb, Illinois, the first time the two teams met this year. Ashley Baker is enjoying a fine season for WIU, compiling 292 kills. Michelle Donnelly and Amy Sauerwein anchor the defense with 89 total blocks and 307 digs respectively. Sauerwein is also second on the team with 231 kills.

UMKC (5-21, 2-8 Summit) has lost six of its last seven matches and 18 of its last 20 overall. The Kangaroos two wins during that span came against Centenary and Oakland, both at home in Kansas City. Sarah Johnson paces the UMKC offense with 240 kills while Kylee Stephenson has been tough in the back row with 407 digs.
