Road Tested Gents Play at Western Saturday
Friday, October 26, 2007

SHREVEPORT – With the end of the regular season coming quickly, the Centenary (3-10-0, 2-2-0) men’s soccer team looks to punch its ticket for the Summit League Tournament with a win over Western Illinois (4-8-3, 0-2-1) on Saturday. However, the Gents still need a little help to get in, as they will hope for UMKC to beat Oral Roberts on Saturday to lock-up one of the final two spots.

Centenary will need to bounce back after its 9-0 loss from seventh ranked Tulsa on Thursday. The Gents were led by freshmen Dan Martens and junior Will Todd, who combined to have three shots on goal.

The offense is led by senior Aaron Volanski, who continues to top the conference in most of the offensive categories, along with being tied for second in game-winning goals (2). Volanski is also tied for 20th nationally in goals per game (1.58) and eighth in points per game (0.75).

Western Illinois’ offense is anchored by Martin Browne Jr. and Preston Bernardi, who have each scored three goals. However, in goal the Leathernecks have used keeper by committee, as Charlie Sales and Stephen Paterson have combined to allow just 17 goals, while stopping 58 shots and shutting out four opponents.

If the Gents can not clinch on Saturday they will have one more opportunity when they travel to UMKC for the final match of the year on Nov. 3.
