Ladies Swept by UAB on Day Two of Century Bank Classic
Saturday, February 9, 2008

TEXARKANA, Texas—The Centenary softball team corrected its pitching problems against Oklahoma State and held UAB to just five runs over the course of a doubleheader on Saturday. However, the Ladies offense failed to generate a run in the twin bill and the Maroon and White fell 2-0 and 3-0 to the Blazers.

Centenary (0-4) received great outings from its starting pitchers in both contests. Stacy Whitmer, coming off of an outstanding game against Oklahoma State on Friday, again kept opposing hitters off balance against UAB on Saturday. The sophomore was charged with single runs in both the second and sixth innings in the game one loss. She scattered six hits and struck out two in six strong innings.

UAB (4-1) got to Whitmer in the second inning on a solo homerun. The Blazers run in the sixth also came on a solo blast.

Centenary managed only six runners all game on three hits, two walks, and an error. Caitlin Cavarra, Brittany Williams, and Allison Shepperd all recorded hits for the Ladies.

In the second game, Ryan Thacker (0-2) went 4.2 innings and gave up just three hits and one run while striking out four. Her only run was allowed in the second inning when, with the bases loaded, the sophomore walked a UAB hitter to force in a run.

Lauren Highsmith surrendered two runs, but only one earned, in 1.1 innings of relief. She gave up only one hit, but walked three hitters and hit another.

The Ladies offense was limited to just four hits, one apiece by Cavarra, Williams, Amy Wiedeman, and Haley Bassett. Only two Centenary players struck out in the loss as the Ladies could simply not find the open holes in the UAB defense.

Williams extended her season-opening hit streak to all four games and Cavarra has a three-game hit streak, having come up empty in only the first game of the year.

The Ladies wrap up play in the Century Bank Classic on Sunday with two games against Arkansas beginning at 2 p.m.
