Wednesday, February 20, 2008

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary men’s and women’s swimming teams will participate in The Summit League Championships starting on Thursday in Rochester, Mich. The Ladies are going to try to bounce back after last seasons fifth place finish, while the Gents look to come out on top after placing second a year ago.

The women’s swimming team has finished fifth the last three years, but earned 387 points last season, which was the most ever by the Ladies. Last season, Centenary freshman Maggie Vaughan earned Newcomer of the Year accolades and just missed a qualifying time for nationals.

The Gents, meanwhile, finished in second place last year and was 143 points in front of third place Eastern Illinois. Centenary’s task to win will not be easy, as it will try to take down Oakland, which has won eight straight conference championships.

Last season head coach Butch Jordan won the conference Coach of the Year honors, as he helped lead his Gents to their best finish ever.

The Summit League Championships will begin Thursday morning and conclude on Saturday. The conference meets will begin with qualifying in the morning, with the event championships being swam in the evening.
