SHREVEPORT—The Centenary softball team will continue its tough early season schedule when it travels to Texas for the Marriott Houston Classic this weekend. The Ladies will play six games over three days against Texas State, Kansas, Cal St.-Northridge, Boston, and the host team, 16th ranked University of Houston.

Centenary (2-9) is coming off of a 3-0 win over rival Louisiana Tech on Wednesday evening. The victory truly was a team effort as the Ladies were missing their 3-4-5 hitters due to injuries and a death in the family. Yet, several players stepped up and Ryan Thacker pitched a gem. Centenary will most likely be without the trio again this weekend.

In the meantime, Allison McClain and Haley Bassett will look to lead the offense. Both are batting over .300, while freshman Caitlin Cavarra is hitting a respectable .278. Thacker has picked up both of Centenary’s wins in the pitching circle and is carrying a 4.47 ERA into the weekend of play.

The Ladies will open play in the tournament against Texas State at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. The Bobcats are 4-6 on the season with key wins over Creighton, Washington, and Summit League member UMKC. Kristina Tello and Alex Newton lead Texas State in hitting, each with batting averages over .350. Katie Garnett is 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA and has recently been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Game two on Friday will pit Centenary against Kansas at 1 p.m. The Jayhawks are 8-3 with wins over BYU and Oregon, but have lost their last two contests to Seton Hall and UNLV. Sarah Vertelka and Valerie George are 4-1 and 2-1 respectively, each with ERA’s below 1.00. The entire pitching staff has a combined ERA of 0.97.

The rest of the weekend schedule has the Ladies taking on Cal St.-Northridge on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. tilt against Houston. The event concludes on Sunday for Centenary with a 9 a.m. matchup with Boston.
