SHREVEPORT—The Centenary softball team hosts the University of South Alabama on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Centenary Softball Complex. The contest will serve as the final tune up for the Ladies before they dive into the conference portion of the season with six Summit League games in five days.

Centenary (10-15) has won eight of its last 10 games, losing only to Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State in the last three weeks. In that span, sophomore pitcher Ryan Thacker caught fire and picked up two conference player of the week citations. Thacker now stands at 6-6 on the year after starting the campaign 1-4.

Also on fire has been sophomore third baseman Allison Shepperd. Shepperd is leading the team with a .455 batting average and has eight extra-base hits, including six doubles on the season. She is getting on base once out of every two at-bats and has stolen a team-best eight bases.

Haley Bassett enjoyed a great stretch of play at the plate last week, going 8-for-18 (.444) and raising her batting average on the year to .328. Junior Emerald Doria also played well, returning to the line-up after missing 17 games due to injury. She belted a homerun in her first game back and had seven RBI last week.

South Alabama (9-9) is 2-5 in its last five games against tough competition. Two of those losses came at the hands of LSU and the third loss was a 3-2 defeat to Tulsa in extra innings. Meanwhile, the Jaguars defeated Penn State and Southern Miss, both by 1-0 scores and both times in extra innings.

Tara Donaldson leads the team in hitting at .385, while Evelyne Pare is hitting .356. The Jaguars have only belted five homeruns on the season compared to Centenary’s 11, but the South Alabama pitching staff has been solid. Freshman Shannon Smith is 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA and sophomore Beth Pilgrim is 5-3 with a 1.88 ERA.

The Jaguars play at Ole Miss on Tuesday night, before traveling to Shreveport to face the Ladies on Wednesday. South Alabama and Centenary have never met on the softball field before.

The game can be heard via free live streaming audio through the official website of Centenary Athletics, www.GoCentenary.com.

Centenary opens Summit League play at home on Friday against IUPUI. After its three-game conference set this weekend, the Ladies will travel to UMKC on Sunday to face the Kangaroos for three league games on Monday and Tuesday.
