Monday, May 5, 2008

SHREVEPORT—The Centenary softball team secured the top seed in the upcoming Summit League Softball Championship by taking two of three games at IPFW last weekend. The Ladies will be looking for their third tournament win since joining the conference in 2004 when they take the field this weekend in Cedar City, Utah.

Centenary (34-24, 17-7 Summit) finished second in the regular season behind North Dakota State. However, the Bison are not eligible for the postseason this year, thus moving the Ladies up to the top spot.

Centenary wrapped up its league season with a .708 winning percentage and won seven of its last eight to close out the schedule. Overall, the Ladies went 32-11 with a school-record 14-game win streak mixed in after starting the campaign just 2-13.

The Maroon and White will play a first round match-up on Friday at 10 a.m. against No.4 Western Illinois (10-31, 9-10 Summit), who swept UMKC on the final weekend of play to gain entry into the tournament field. The other opening round contest pits No.3 IPFW (16-22, 8-8 Summit) against No.2 Southern Utah (19-32, 12-9 Summit) at 12:30 p.m.

Allison Shepperd leads the Ladies’ effort with a .353 batting average, good for fifth place in the league. She also ranks in the Top 10 in doubles (18), RBI (37), runs (34), hits (60), total bases (94), on-base percentage (.402), and slugging percentage (.553). Ryan Thacker leads Centenary on the mound with 16 wins and 132 strikeouts in 176 innings of work, while Stacy Whitmer has 13 wins and 129 strikeouts in 132.2 innings.
