Softball Hosts Grambling and Baylor

SHREVEPORT – After a tough trip to Florida last week, the Centenary softball team will host I-20 rival Grambling on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and nationally recognized Baylor Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.


The Ladies are 11-6 this season and are led by freshman Lindsey Smith, who is batting .365 with six home runs and 16 RBIs. Also playing well offensively is senior Allison McClain, who in 15 games is batting .348 with a homer and three runs knocked in.


In the circle, freshman Hillary Phillips (6-2) is holding opponents to a .172 batting average and he has allowed just 14 earned runs in 59.2 innings. Sophomore Jessica Bock, meanwhile, has a 3.07 ERA to go a long with five complete games and one shutout.


Earlier this season Centenary defeated Grambling 6-0 behind a dominate pitching performance from Phillips. The Tigers are 2-10 this year and are led by Denean Woods, who is batting .400 with six RBIs.


Baylor in 2009 is 17-3, but has played just five games on the road, holding a 2-3 record away from Waco.


The Bears’ offense comes from Brette Reagan, who is batting .356  with five home runs and 20 RBIs. Alex Colyer has the highest batting average on the team, as she is hitting .443 with 27 hits and a team leading five doubles.


Anchoring the pitching staff for Baylor is Whitney Canion, who has a 1.03 ERA in 14 appearances. She also has pitched 81.1 innings, has five shutouts, 117 strikeouts, but has walked a team-high 24 batters.
