Saturday, March 7, 2009

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centenary softball team picked up a pair of wins during the second day of competition at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic on Saturday. The Ladies were victorious over Winthrop 9-2 and then edged Akron 2-1.

Game one

It was a big offensive day for three Centenary hitters, as junior Allison Shepperd led the way with four RBIs. Freshman Lindsey Smith continued her hot hitting with a 4-for-4 afternoon to go along with two RBIs and home run. Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra, meanwhile, also had two hits and knocked two runs.

Pitching for Centenary was freshman Hillary Phillips, who went seven innings gave-up four hits, two runs, while walking one and fanning two.

Game two

The nightcap was an offensive struggle for the Ladies, but junior Haley Bassett and Shepperd’s RBIs in the fifth inning provided all the offensive they needed. Bassett was a perfect 2-for-2 from the dish with a run scored as well.

Sophomore Jessica Bock, meanwhile, was nearly unhittable scattering just two hits, allowing one unearned run and striking out three.

The Ladies will play just one game on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. against Toledo with live stats on http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/09-buzz-classic.html.
