Baseball, Gymnastics and Softball Host Events

SHREVEPORT – It will be another busy home weekend for Centenary athletics, as baseball plays Jarvis Christian on Friday at 6 p.m., gymnastics hosts LSU at 7 p.m. on Friday and softball opens conference play against IPFW with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m.




The Gents (6-3) are coming off of an 8-3 victory over No. 18 Arkansas and were led by sophomore pitcher Boone Whiting, who went 7.1 innings and struck out nine. At the plate Travis Leversen went 2-for-5 with a team-best two RBIs, while three others also collected two hits.


Jarvis Christian is 6-11 this season and is coming off of two straight losses to Louisiana College. Jarvis is led offensively by Ruben Perez, who is hitting .295, but has just three RBIs, while Michael Rios and Felix Rivera each have 13 runs knocked in.  




After splitting its weekend against Southeast Missouri and Pennsylvania, the Ladies will host SEC power LSU to close out the regular season. Centenary will be without its junior leader Courtney Hawkins, who sustained a season-ending leg injury.


The sixth-ranked Tigers have lost just two meets this season and both were to then No. 6 Auburn No. 8 Georgia. LSU has won five consecutive meets, which includes edging out North Carolina State 197.150-195.725 last weekend.




The Ladies have won four win a row and 6-of-8, while IPFW (4-6) has played 10 games in five days. Last weekend Centenary tied for first place at Georgia Tech Buzz Classic after going 4-1.


Offensively, freshman Lindsey Smith is batting .382 with a team-high seven doubles, nine home runs and 25 RBIs. IPFW, meanwhile, is led by Cassie Wolfe, who is hitting .344 with 11 hits, one homer and four runs knocked in.
