Ladies Complete Three Game Sweep of Jags

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After scoring early in both games, the Centenary softball team completed a three-game sweep of Summit League foe IUPUI on Saturday afternoon. The Ladies took game one 9-3 and escaped the nightcap with a 5-3 victory.

Game one

The freshmen class had a big morning, as Kalyn Harris, Lindsey Smith and Jenny Varteressian combined to knock in seven runs. Harris had three RBIs in the first, while Smith drove in two in the second and Varteressian hit her second home run in the third inning.

Another freshman, Hillary Phillips wasn’t to be outdone by her classmates, as she pitched a complete game five hitter. The Odessa, Texas, native allowed three runs, walked two and struck out seven to notch her 12th victory of the season.  

Game two

Centenary scored three times in the first inning with Varteressian knocking in the first run on a sacrifice fly. The Ladies scored their other two runs after a throwing error by IUPUI’s shortstop Stacy Harte.

After the Jags got the game within one in the second, Centenary answered back with a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra drove in one of the Ladies run on an infield single, while Centenary’s final tally was scored by Smith’s 11th home run.

The Ladies will travel to Little Rock, Ark., on Wednesday to play Arkansas beginning at 6:30 p.m.
