Ladies Drop Eight Inning Contest
Saturday, April 18, 2009

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Centenary softball team scored a one run in the second, third and fourth innings, but in the bottom of the eighth Oakland squeaked out the 4-3 Summit League win on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Emerald Doria picked up the Ladies first RBI on a single to center, which gave Centenary a 1-0 lead. In the third, sophomore Caitlin Cavarra gave the Ladies a 2-0 advantage when she scored on an error by the catcher.

Oakland came back and scored three times in the bottom half of the third to take a 3-2 lead -- in part because of two errors by Centenary. The Ladies tied the game at three in the fourth when sophomore Bonnie Matak singled home Doria.

The score stayed the same until the eighth when an infield single by Kylie Schalz scored Julie Owen, who led the inning off with a single.

Freshman Hillary Phillips tossed 7.2 innings, allowed eight hits, two earned runs, while walking one and fanning five.  Oakland’s Jessican Granger threw a complete game six hitter, but walked four and allowed three runs.

Centenary will return to action on Friday when Southern Utah comes to Shreveport for a three-game series. ‘Senior Day’ festivities will take place prior to the game on Saturday, and all three contests will be broadcast on www.GoCentenary.com
