Ladies Win Finale Over Bison
Saturday, May 2, 2009

FARGO, N.D. – Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra gave the Centenary softball team all the momentum it needed in the first with a lead-off home run, which helped the Ladies cruise to an 8-4 Summit League victory over North Dakota State.

The Ladies spotted themselves three-run lead after the first inning and then pushed the advantage even further with a two-run second. Freshman Jenny Varteressian platted both runs in the second with a single.

NDSU got its deficit down after scoring a run in the second, but Centenary would answer right back when freshman Katie Matthews smacked a tape measure shot to left center field to give the Ladies a 6-1 lead.

The offensive fire power for Centenary would come back in the fifth and sixth innings when senior Allison McClain singled in a run and then Cavarra went yard again for her first career multi-home run game.

Sophomore Lauren Highsmith in just her third start of the year pitched a complete game nine hitter. The Houston, Texas, native allowed four runs, walked six and struck out two, which helped get her first win in 2009.

Centenary has now locked up the third seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament and will play second place North Dakota State in the first round. Live stats will be available on Western Illinois website at www.WIUAthletics.com.
