Ladies Begin Postseason Adventure

SHREVEPORT – A familiar foe will await the Centenary softball team on Friday afternoon in the first game of The Summit League Championship. The Ladies will play North Dakota State, a squad they just met with three times last weekend in Fargo.


Centenary is the third seed after finishing 2009 with a 13-9 conference record, while NDSU completed the year at 19-4 and is the two seed. The Ladies and Bison will play either Southern Utah or Western Illinois in the second game on Friday.


The power hitting Ladies have belted 42 home runs, which shattered the previous team make of 38 set in 2006. Also setting marks for Centenary was freshman Lindsey Smith, who is second in a season in home runs (12) and RBIs (41), while pitchers Hillary Phillips and Jessica Bock have puts marks in the record book. Phillips is second in ERA (1.87) and Bock is fifth in wins (16).


NDSU was riding a seven game winning streak before Centenary snapped it with an 8-4 win on Saturday. The Bison were one of the hottest teams in the league to end the year, as they were 15-4 in the final month of the season, which includes beating Notre Dame, who is receiving votes in the coach’s poll.


WIU holds the top seed for this weekend’s tournament after losing just two games in league play. The Westerwinds dropped a 4-1 decision to Centenary and lost 4-2 to NDSU.


SUU is the fourth and final seed in the conference tournament after ending the season 13-11 in conference, but were 23-29 overall. The Thunderbirds went 7-2 in the final nine conference games, only falling to Centenary and UMKC.
