Monday, August 11, 2008

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Centenary women’s soccer team has been picked to finish ninth by The Summit League head coaches. The Ladies are coming off of a 5-12-2 2007 season and an 0-6-2 mark in league play.

Centenary returns 15 letterwinners from last season’s squad, including all-newcomer team member Catie Depew, who will anchor the defense for the Ladies. Lauren Cheaney and Kristine Weaver each collected three points last season and return to the field for head coach Chase Wooten.

Chosen first by the conference coaches was Oakland, who received five first place votes, while Western Illinois was chosen second. The Westwinds finished just one vote behind the Golden Grizzlies for first. South Dakota State (third) and North Dakota State (fourth), meanwhile, round out the top four.

According to the coaches, Oral Roberts (fifth), Southern Utah (sixth), IUPUI (seventh) and IPFW (eighth) will just miss the conference tournament, as they were voted five through eight respectively.

“We play some solid defense this fall," said Wooten. "We will suprise the teams in our conference and we are capable of winning  right now. We just need to go out and prove that we can the games."

The Ladies 2008 season will get started at home on Friday, Aug. 22, against McNeese State beginning at 7 p.m.
