Thursday, September 4, 2008

SHREVEPORT – The 2008 Centenary men’s soccer team’s season begins on Friday at the Missouri State Tournament in Springfield, Mo. The Gents will play Drake at 5 p.m. on Friday and Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Centenary comes into the regular season with a positive outlook, after winning both of its preseason contests, defeating Harding, 4-1, and UT-Tyler, 1-0. Four different Gents scored goals during the preseason, while sophomore goal keeper Rennie Walker allowed just one goal in nearly 200 minutes of work.

Drake comes into this weekend undefeated after shutting out UW-Milwaukee and SIU Edwardsville, 2-0.

Leading the offensive charge for the Bulldogs is Hunter Kennedy, who has scored two goals. Michael Drozd has started both games between the posts for Drake and has eight saves and two shutouts.

Missouri State, meanwhile, is 0-1-1 this year tying UW-Milwaukee, 1-1, and dropping its match to SIU Edwardsville, 1-0.

The Bears’ offense is led by David Buckenheimer, who scored the team’s lone goal late in the second half to send the game into overtime. Alex Riggs has made 13 stops in 200 minutes of action and has allowed just two goals.

This will be the first meeting between Centenary and Drake, while the Gents have met Missouri State seven times. Last season the Bears got the best of Centenary with a 4-1 victory.

The next action for Centenary will be Friday, Sept. 12, at the Central Arkansas Tournament in Conway, Ark. The Gents will play Bowling Green on Friday and Belmont on Saturday.
