Gents Hang Tough With Drake
Friday, September 5, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Sophomore Rennie Walker made a career-high 11 saves, but it wasn’t enough, as the Centenary men’s soccer team fell to Drake 1-0 on Friday night at the Missouri State Tournament.

The Gents (0-1) had the first shot opportunity of the evening, but sophomore Brian Hurlburt’s shot went wide. However, just two minutes later the momentum quickly changed, as Garrett Webb scored on header from Julien Edwards on cross.

To close the first period, Centenary had two more chances to put the ball away, but just came up empty. Junior Mo Assi had the first chance, but his shot was stopped by Michael Drozd and Tate McIntyre’s ball went high.

Opening up the second half, Centenary’s defense played great despite allowing Drake (3-0) to get six shots off in an eight minute time span. However, Walker continued his outstanding play as he was able to stop all six shots.

Again the Gents had a chance to tie the match late, but freshmen John McHugh and Aaron Begman’s shots were saved by Drozd. Bergman’s shot however came when there was just eight ticks left on the clock.

Centenary will be back out on the field Saturday when it plays host Missouri State at 7 p.m.
