Gents and Ladies Chosen High in Preseason Poll

ELMHURST, Ill. – After coming off of great finishes at The Summit League Championships in February, the Centenary men’s and women’s swimming teams were picked second and third respectively.


The Gents (21 points) received one first place vote and picked behind Oakland (25 points), who got five first place votes. Western Illinois (17 points) was picked third Eastern Illinois (11 points) fourth, IUPUI (9 points) fifth and South Dakota State (7 points) sixth.


Centenary, meanwhile, returns third-place finishers Wladimir Montoya (100 fly) and Aaron Otto (100 back) to its 2008-09 team. Head coach Butch Jordan also welcomes five all-league members back to the Gents’ squad.


On the women’s side Oakland (25 points) was chosen first, while Western Illinois (19 points) got one first place vote and was picked second. The Ladies picked up 16 points, while South Dakota State (14 points), Eastern Illinois (10 points) and IUPUI (6 points) round out the coach’s predictions.


The Ladies also return five all-league members from last season and will be led by 1,650 free champion Maggie Vaughan. Vaughan also recorded a second-place performance in the 500 free, while Natalie Holcomb (200 free) and Lauren Kloepfer (400 IM) placed third.


“I had a feeling we would be picked second and third after coming off of last years performance at the conference meet,” said Jordan. “I believe this season we have a better team and we should perform even better.”


Both teams will be in action on Saturday in the annual Maroon and White Scrimmage beginning at 1 p.m. at the Centenary Fitness Center.
