SHREVEPORT – After overcoming an early deficient, the Centenary volleyball team battled back and forced Tuesday evenings match to a fifth and deciding set. The Ladies used domination in the fourth set and pure will in the fifth to win 3-2 (22-25, 28-26, 15-25, 25-17, 15-12).

Early on in the first set things were tight, but SELU used a 7-0 run to give itself a lead it never relinquished. However, the Ladies fought back to pull within two, but the Lions called a timeout to kill Centenary’s momentum.

In the second set things again proved to be tough for the Ladies as they fell down by four midway through. The difference remained four late, but an attack error by SELU’s Kalynn Evans gave Centenary the momentum back, as it went on a 10-4 run to win the set.

Things started looking bleak for the Ladies in the third game, as they fell down 7-1 and could never crawl back. What could have been the deciding fourth set, Centenary used two runs of five and six that was sparked by Bethany Kern and Kayla Tibaldo to win.

The Ladies opened up the last set to lead by three (7-4), but SELU was able to overcome its early downfall and grab a two point lead (11-9). Centenary, meanwhile, was able to bounce back after Jaclyn Lopez rattled off three consecutive points, which gave the Ladies the lead for good.

Leading the Ladies offensively was Bethany Kern and Jennifer Kunze, who had 15 and 13 kills respectively. Kern was able to bang out a double-double, as she had a match-high 18 digs, while Jaclyn Lopez had a team-best 41 assists and 15 digs.

Centenary will be back in action on Saturday when Mississippi Valley State comes to the Fitness Center for a 2 p.m. start.
