Ladies and Gents Host Seven Home Events

SHREVEPORT – If you’re a fan collegiate sports, then this weekend is perfect for you. The action will get started on Friday when both of Centenary’s soccer teams host Summit League matches. Saturday’s schedule begins when the softball team hosts its annual fall tournament, swimming starts its 2008-09 season against Delta State, cross country will welcome several local teams to the Centenary Invitational and the volleyball team plays Mississippi Valley State. Closing the dream weekend for college sports fans will be the men’s soccer team on Sunday at 1 p.m.

 

Women’s Soccer

 

Centenary comes into its conference opener against Oakland on a bit of a roll, as it beat Nicholls State, 4-2, and tied Louisiana Tech, 1-1, its last time out. The Ladies and Grizzlies will begin their match at 5 p.m. on Friday.  

 

Leading the Ladies is freshman Katie Valdez, who has scored four goals, while classmate Deb Hill has made 35 saves in split duty with junior Kate Donnelly. Oakland comes to Shreveport with a 1-7-2 record and is led by Jessica Boyle, Deanna Colarossi and Kristi Evans, who each have scored three goals.   

 

Men’s Soccer

 

The Gents will finally open their home schedule on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Summit League rival IPFW. Then on Sunday, Centenary continues its homestand against Central Arkansas at 1 p.m.

 

Offensively, freshman John McHugh has scored three goals, while Sammy Robinson and Brian Hurlburt have also hit paydirt. Sophomore Rennie Walker has made 40 saves, allows just 1.84 goals a match and has one shutout.

 

Softball

 

The Ladies are having a good fall season, as they come into Saturday tournament with a 5-1 record. Centenary will host Bossier Parrish Community College at 9:30 a.m., LSU-Alexandria at 5:30 p.m. and Louisiana Tech at 7:30 p.m.

 

Through six games, Haley Bassett is hitting .571 with an RBI and a triple, while Caitlin Cavarra is swinging her stick for a .500 average with four RBIs and a home run. In the circle, Jessica Bock has handcuffed her opponents, as she has struck out 18, allowed only two earned runs in 13 innings of work.  

 

Cross Country

 

The women put in a great performance on Monday at the Northwestern State Invitational, as they finished second. The Gents, meanwhile, also ran well, placing fourth and just 13 points behind NSU for third place. The Centenary Invitational will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Disk Golf Course on the corner of Stoner Avenue and Clyde Fant Parkway.  

 

Freshman Brittany Wilkens won the individual title on Monday, and on Tuesday she garnered Summit League Runner of the Week honors. The Gents top runner was junior Adam Nerio, who finished in 13th place.

 

Swimming    

 

At last months intrasquad meet, 15 members of the Ladies and Gents swimming team put their names into the record. Freshman Lauren Lassiter was able break the school mark in the 50 yard backstroke in a time of 28.67.

 

The Ladies and Gents will look to get a bit a revenge this year after last seasons meet in Mississippi, as both squads were beat by Delta State. Centenary will begin its 2008-09 quest at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the fitness center on campus.

 

Volleyball

 

After their come from behind victory on Tuesday over Southeastern Louisiana, the Ladies will host one of its last nonconference games of the season. MVSU is 7-9 this season and did drop its match to Centenary in straight sets at the Central Arkansas Tournament back on Sept. 6.

 

Brianna Kern tops the Ladies in kills with 130, while she also averages two digs per set and has scored 142.5 points. The leading setter for Centenary is Jaclyn Lopez, who has 285 assists, while Caitlin Neese follows with 135.
