SHREVEPORT – The Centenary volleyball team smacked seven service aces, but couldn’t climb out of early holes, as it fell to Oakland (21-25, 21-25, 23-25) in straight sets in Summit League action on Friday night.

Centenary (4-14, 0-5) was down 10-4 early in the first set, but was able to tie it at 11, in part because of two kills by freshmen Brianna Kern and Kinsey Mims. However, to close the match Oakland went on a 3-0 run to seal the set win.

The Ladies found themselves down by four five times in the second set, and got within two late but just couldn’t mount the come from behind rally. In game two freshmen Jennifer Kunze and Erika Lunsford each had three kills, while senior Ashlee Freeman also had three.

After a Kern kill, the Ladies went up by three (16-13) late in the third set, but Oakland called a timeout to try to stop Centenary’s rally. The stoppage of play did just that, as the Golden Grizzlies were able to tie the game at 16 and eventually win.

Offensively, the Ladies were led by Kunze, who had a team-high 11 kills, while Kern tacked on nine. Freshman Jaclyn Lopez had a match-high 27 assists and three assisted blocks.

The next action for Centenary will be at home on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against conference foe Oral Roberts.
