Gents Downed by Golden Grizzlies

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Four saves by sophomore Rennie Walker and two shots on goal by freshman John McHugh wasn’t enough for the Centenary men’s soccer team, as it fell to Oakland, 2-0, in Summit League play on Saturday afternoon.

The Gents offense struggled in the first period, as junior Todd Faulkinberry gave the team their first shot with 1:15 left. The defense, meanwhile, kept Centenary close in the opening 45 minutes, holding Oakland to just two shots on goal.

The second half was played closer, as Centenary’s offensive began going into attack mode. The Gents fired off five shots, with three landing on goal, as Golden Grizzly keeper Steve Clark had all three stops.

As Centenary was trying to make one last offensive push late to tie the match, the Gents lost a ball in their zone and Makesi Lewis scored from 20 yard out to put the game away for Oakland.

“We continue to show our youth in these close matches,” said head coach David Orr. “Our shots in the second half were right at Oakland’s keeper, and if we want to win we can’t do that.”

The Gents will have six days to get ready for their next match at Oral Roberts on Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
