Todd's Goal in Second Half Not Enough for Gents
Friday, October 24, 2008

SHREVEPORT—Senior Will Todd’s goal in the 53rd minute tied the game at one, but a goal late in the game helped propel Western Illinois to a 2-1 victory on Friday night in Summit League action.

In the first half Centenary (3-8-1, 1-4-0) had its first shot at 4:05 when freshman John McHugh fired high at Leatherneck keeper Stephen Paterson. WIU scored first near the end of the opening 45 minutes at 39:15 when Jona Andrade hit the back of the net.

The second half proved to be competitive as the Gents and Leathernecks each found a way to score. Centenary struck early on Todd’s first goal of the season as he fired off a shot from 10 yards out off the foot of McHugh.

Centenary had its best chance to take the lead in the second half on McHugh’s shot at 60:03, but the ball was saved by Paterson. However, the dagger in the heart from the Leathernecks came at 65:08 when WIU’s Jeff Schield hit the match-winner.

With the loss, Centenary’s chances to make the conference tournament took a hit, and the Gents will try to bounce back next Saturday when they host UMKC.
