SHREVEPORT – Up 2-1 and looking for the clincher in the fourth set the young Centenary volleyball team just couldn’t close the deal, falling in five to Summit League rival IUPUI on Sunday evening (25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 24-26, 8-15).

Centenary opened up the first set with a monstrous lead (12-3), but slowly IUPUI crept back into the game. However, a 3-0 run at the end of the set gave the Ladies a win, as Kinsey Mims led the way with five kills.

Most of the second game was back and fourth, but Centenary went up by five (22-17) on an attack error by Lauran Thompson of IUPUI. The Jaguars called a timeout after the error and proceeded to close the game on an 8-1 run.

The Ladies fell down early in the third game (10-9), but turned it around on six straight points to win in dominating fashion. Centenary’s offense was led by freshman Brianna Kern and Jennifer Kunze, who had three and five kills respectively.

The fourth game was a nail bitter all the way, as neither squad could put each other away. Centenary went up 24-23 after an Ashlee Freeman kill and seemingly had the match won, but a stall by IUPUI ended the Ladies offensive rhythm.

Freshman Jaclyn Lopez had her only kill of the evening in game five to put the Ladies up by one (7-6) in the race to 15. However, the Jaguars won the race, as they closed the match on a 9-1 run.

Leading the Ladies offense was Kunze, who had a match-high 15 kills, while Kern followed with 12. Lopez also had a match-best 38 assists, while also tallying 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.

Centenary will be back out on the court next Friday and Saturday at Oakland and IPFW.
