Thursday, November 13, 2008

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary volleyball team’s season will close this weekend, as it hosts North Dakota State on Friday at 7 p.m. and South Dakota State on Sunday at 3 p.m. Sunday will also be ‘Senior Day’ for middle blocker Ashlee Freeman, which will take place between sets two and three.

The Ladies will try to play upset maker on Friday, when NDSU comes in with an unblemished conference record. Centenary’s offense continues to be led by freshman Brianna Kern, who has 227 kills and 248.5 points. Last Sunday freshman Jaclyn Lopez cracked into the top 10 all-time at Centenary in assists with 577, which is also good for eighth in a season.

Freeman, meanwhile, will leave Centenary first all-time in block assists (399), fifth in block solos (43), fourth in kill attempts (2733), third in kills (1043), ninth in service aces (82) and first in total blocks (342).

The Bison will enter the weekend 20-3 and 14-0 in conference play, while not having dropped a match since Sept. 13 against Tulane. NDSU is led by Chrissy Knuth, who has 247 kills and just 71 errors, while Mattie Johnson has a team-high 603 assists.

SDSU has to win both of its matches and have IPFW drop both this weekend in order to claim a spot in The Summit League Tournament. The Jackrabbits are 6-8 in league play, while the Mastodons are 8-6.

The match on Sunday afternoon will conclude the 2008 season for the Ladies and they will be back out on the court in August 2009.
